It has been confirmed that the chairman of the General Assembly of the unorthodox church of Shincheonji, Lee Man-hee, who is under investigation for allegedly interfering with the Corona 19 preventive measures and embezzlement, refused to comply with the prosecution's call for him to be summoned again on Tuesday.
Because of that, the prosecution is coordinating other summoning dates with Lee's side, while also considering a compulsory investigation through a request for an arrest warrant if they continue not to comply with the request.
According to the attorneys, the sixth criminal division (chief prosecutor Park Seung-dae) of the Suwon District Prosecutors' Office, which is investigating the case, tried to call in Lee again for questioning, but Lee did not present himself.
Lee's side reportedly refused to comply with the investigation again mentioning a chronic illness.
Earlier, the prosecution summoned the chairman on the 17th at 9:30 a.m. to investigate the allegations of violating the Act on the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and embezzlement and breach of trust under the Specific Economic Crimes Punishment Act.
However, the examination was suspended four hours later, around 1:30 p.m., because Mr. Lee complained of having a chronic disease.
"We asked the chairman to attend the meeting in the morning, but in the end he did not show up," a prosecution official said. "It has not been confirmed whether he is receiving treatment due to his poor physical condition."
Regarding Lee's repeated non-cooperation in the investigation, some in the legal circle say that it is a strategy to gain time until the Corona 19 incident calms down and the case is forgotten.
"Although the public opinion is strongly calling for the punishment of Shincheonji at the moment, the public resentment may subside over time, which could weaken the prosecution's dedication to the investigation," an attorney said. "As early as this week, a massive personnel reshuffle will take place, starting with the chief prosecutor, and they may have avoided the investigation to take advantage of this situation."
The prosecution plans to reschedule the summons in accordance with Lee's schedule.
However, it is considering getting an arrest warrant and forcing the investigation, if they continue not to cooperate."Even during the last summons, the chest pain and blood pressure did not seem serious enough to prevent the investigation " a prosecution official said.
